2011-12 Fentonian 'More 2 It'

This was my first event that I struggled with shooting. This was the homecoming dance of my freshman year. I was the only one, besides our adviser, that was shooting this event. I knew I needed to do my best to get an image that not only had good quality and composition, but that focused on something that is not usually highlighted in a story about the dance.

I chose this image because I really am in love with it, and the story behind it as well. I had gone to the play to shoot, and as it is mentioned in the story, they were doing two different shows on different nights, and I had been assigned to shoot The Glass Menagerie, but had actually shown up on the night of A Streetcar Named Desire, and I decided to just stay and continue to shoot, and I am glad that I made that decision, because I was able to produce this image.

I decided to submit this image, because this is one of the first shots I was really proud of as a staff photographer. I love the emotion in the faces in the image, and just the joy of the moment between the two individuals. This was my first time shooting graduation, so I honestly had no idea what kind of shots I should try to get, all I knew was that there was a lot of emotion, and it was my mission to capture it.

This image made its way into my portfolio not just because of the image itself, but the process behind this image. At this event. the local news station came to our school bright and early at 5:30 a.m. for a canned food drive, and some good old fashion school spirit. At this event, there were 100 things happening at once. The band preforming, cheerleader cheering, sports team members rallying, and students just getting all around pumped up. With all of these things around me, it was a whirlwind of a morning, and I had to figure out which part of the hustle and bustle to focus on.

I decided upon this image for submission for a few reasons. First, this is an image that depicts academics, which is usually hard to get a good, interesting picture of, that captures the eye of a reader. Also, this picture made its way here because I think the use of the rule of thirds is very strong, and works well with this image, as well as leading lines.

This image has come to be one of my favorites I have ever taken. I had an advantage when getting this shot, because I was a member of the swim team, and I knew all of our pre-meet rituals, and the team was comfortable enough to be natural around me. This image, even with my advantage, still faced a lot of struggles. At first, there was the issue of the light. With the suits and clothes all being dark, and the direct fluorescent light from above it was difficult to find a happy medium between the lighting. The other challenge was they type of lens I was equipped with, and the wet floor. My lens was too big for me to be able to look through the viewfinder to take the shot, and the floor was wet so I couldn't set my camera down, so I had issues with finding the right way to angle and place my camera, but in the end I succeeded.

I chose to submit this image because to me, this is a true definition of shooting in the moment, and capturing the memory. As far as everyone knew, this was going to be a regular graduation, where each student walks across the stage to receive their diploma, but in this special occurrence, this eager senior also snaps a selfie with his graduating class, and it only took a split second to happen, and thankfully I was able to capture it.

Even though this image was submitted into the paper with an incorrect photo credit, I still chose to submit this image. I love this image because of the diverse colors in the image. Also, you get a look into the interactions in the student section during a Friday night basketball game. Fenton is known for having the best student section in the Flint Metro League, and this image showcases one of our many themed nights, this photo was taken during 'beach night'.

This image was chosen for my portfolio, because I love every aspect of this image. This image not only shows the twirler in her natural habitat, where she feels most comfortable, but you can see the joy in her face. From the football stadium lights you can see every minuscule sparkle on her costume, and the way her skirt is frittering around her in mid-spin, is incredibly satisfying in this image.

I chose this image because you truly feel like you are there, in the moment with this family, as their daughter is named Homecoming Queen. The happiness and surprise in their faces is so raw, and the lights are hitting their faces perfectly, with little distractions in the background, which lets you focus on the foreground.

This image made it into my submissions because there are so many things I love about this image. I love the way I was able to capture the way the water was splashing, her expression, and how perfectly centered she is in the image, even though in most cases, a perfectly centered image is boring. Swim is always one of my favorite sports to shoot, but it is also challenging, because it is usually hard to see the swimmers' faces, and the lighting in most natatoriums is horrendous.

I chose to submit this photo because, like many sports, getting an image where you can see the participant's face, enough to distinguish who they are, is fairly difficult. In this moment of shooting, I was able to capture the players face. You can tell how determined he is, to make a touchdown, to continue to be undefeated. This image has just enough action, but not too much. You can see the falling players, trailing behind him as he heads forward. The colors and depth of field in this image are also particularly nice.
